NRCS Watershed Operations

The NRCS Watershed Operations Program is a nation-wide voluntary program which provides assistance to sponsoring local organizations of authorized watershed projects, planned and approved under the authority of the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act of 1954 (P.L. 83-566), and 11 designated watershed authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1944 (P.L. 78-534). NRCS provides technical and financial assistance to project sponsors to implement authorized watershed project plans for the purpose of flood mitigation; water quality improvements; watershed protection; soil erosion reduction; fish and wildlife enhancement; wetlands and wetland function creation and restoration; rural, irrigation water management; and municipal/industrial water supply.

Watershed Operations funds that may be available for watershed projects are subject to numerous requirements. For more information regarding the NRCS Watershed Operations Program including eligibility criteria please go to: http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/watershed/

    Rapid Watershed Assessments

In 2007, NRCS Kentucky developed the Mississippi Bayous Rapid Watershed Assessment (RWA) for the Jackson Purchase area of western Kentucky. Selection of this area was based on land cover, soils types, water quality issues, erosion/sedimentation concerns, presence of threatened and endangered species, and the presence of high quality wetland wildlife habitat. A RWA is a summary evaluation of watersheds which provides preliminary estimates of where conservation efforts would best address the concerns of local landowners and interested parties. For more information on the RWA development process and how RWAs are being developed by NRCS, go to
    http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/rwa/index.html.
