News Release (DOC; 48 KB) Updated 10/09/2009 United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service 771 Corporate Drive Suite 210 Lexington, KY 40503 Phone: 859-224-7350 Web: http://www.ky.nrcs.usda.gov Lexington, Ky., October 9, 2009 — Tom Perrin, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) State Conservationist in Kentucky said, "The Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) is a great way for landowners, who already implement conservation practices, to continue and add to those practices in Kentucky. This second sign-up period will offer landowners another chance to participate in this stewardship program." CSP was authorized by the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 (2008 Farm Bill). The first sign-up occurred August 10 through September 30, 2009 and with the latest announcement from NRCS, a second sign-up period commenced on October 1 and will continue through January 2010. CSP is a voluntary program encouraging agricultural and forestry producers to maintain existing conservation activities and adopt additional ones on their operations. A self-screening checklist is available for potential participants to determine whether CSP is a suitable program for them or their operation. The checklist is available on NRCS' website and at NRCS field offices. After completion, for those selected for funding, NRCS staff will conduct on-site field verifications of applicants' information. Once verified and approved for funding, the landowner must develop a conservation stewardship plan. For information about CSP, including eligibility requirements, producers can visit www.nrcs.usda.gov/new_csp or visit their local NRCS field office.. #
