Earth Day Events

Hardin County Hardin County Conservation District Tree Giveaway.

Hardin County Conservation District held their annual tree giveaway in observance of Arbor Day.
A local Boy Scout troop volunteered to bag the trees for the giveaway. They bagged over 3,500 trees in an unusual frigid temperature for this time of year.  Several people from the community expressed their appreciation for the chance to obtain trees to plant in their yards. With the sprawl of urban development in Elizabethtown, the annual tree giveaway is a great incentive to encourage people to pay attention to our natural resources and put back some of what is being taken away.  Forestry and NRCS staff were on hand to answer questions.

Whitley County - Celebrating Soil and Water Stewardship Week.

Whitley County conservation quiltThe Whitley County Conservation District is always looking to expand their educational program and find fresh new ways to reach out to the community. In celebrating Soil and Water Stewardship Week, district employees designed bulletin boards and distributed them to participating schools.

The designs varied based on the age group of the students, and were designed with the theme "Where Do You Fit In?"

Bell County  - Tree Give-Away.

Each year, the Bell County Conservation District gives away approximately 500 trees in cooperation with the Kentucky Forestry Department. The tree give away is held at the local mall in Middlesboro.

This year a record number of people came out for the tree give-away. The mall manager really loves having all the people turn out. Usually after they pick up their tree, they will shop. The manager volunteered to give the district $500.00 to help purchase more trees for next year. The manager of the mall said, “The tree give-away was a great help to bring people into the mall each year.”

This year when we arrived at the mall there were over 200 hundred people waiting for the trees.
