KENTUCKY IS AWARDED TWO CONSERVATION INNOVATION GRANTS FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
(Lexington, Ky.), July 13, 2009— Earlier today,
USDA Secretary Vilsack announced the recipients of Conservation
Innovation Grants (CIG). There are two awardees in Kentucky, the University of
Kentucky Research Foundation and Mountain Association for Community
Economic Development, Inc. (MACED).
Both projects in Kentucky address natural resource concerns of soil,
water, and forest health.
The University of Kentucky Research Foundation received $94,123 for a
project that will demonstrate and encourage adoption of a new soil
moisture-based automatic pulse irrigation system and MACED received
$500,000 to demonstrate the role carbon revenue can play as market-based
economic incentives that result in sustainable forest practice at scale
in private lands.
Grantees provide matching funds and Natural Resources Conservation
Service (NRCS) administers the program and provides technical oversight
for each project.
More information about CIG is available at www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/cig.
A listing and summaries of approved fiscal year 2009 projects can be
found at www.nrcs.usda.gov.
